CUSTOM FLY TYING
Ken Sample is now offering his custom-tied flies for sale. Please call or email us if you are interested. Minimum order one dozen of each pattern, but hook sizes can be mixed. Contact us for individual samples. Prices vary by the pattern and amount ordered. We've personally tested all of these fly patterns in both our home waters in Colorado and Washington, and all around the country, and we've given them to many others online to try out, including many at Fish-In gatherings hosted by Fly Anglers Online. We don't include patterns that don't consistantly catch fish!
Ken uses only the highest quality materials and hooks in his flies. The hooks you'll see are top of the line, from Tiemco or Daiichi. We use only barbless hooks or we crimp the barb, but barbed hook flies are available by special order. Hackles, both dry fly and wet fly, are supplied by Conranch Hackle and CR Birds from the beautiful Spokane valley of Washington. You'll see some very unique hackle colors on our flies because of these suppliers!
Dippers

Ken's Yellow Dipper
Ken came up with this fly pattern a while back, and we (and others) have been testing it for two years now. We've tested it in many different sizes and colors. So far in 2007, it's taken fish in Arkansas, Washington, Michigan, Colorado and Idaho! The most successful colors have been yellow and gray, with rust brown, tan and green close behind.
When fishing this fly, use floatant ONLY on the wing, and avoid the body. Large sizes (#6 - #10) have been very effective for us in imitating the big October caddis in Idaho, and others have used them as yellow stoneflies. We've used the smaller sizes in many colors to imitate different mayflies around the country.

Quill-bodied dry flies
Quills are an excellent body material for dry flies. The quills are hollow, and they float like crazy! Like putting a PFD on your fly...

Crawdads
If you have lakes or rivers that contain crawdads, this is a great pattern to take fish with. It's tied backwards, with the head at the hook bend. It tends to ride upside down in the water to avoid snagging weeds. In Colorado's high altitude prarie lakes (North Park, South Park, etc.) use intermediate line and toss this sucker out in the weed beds as autumn sets in, and strip it back in pairs of fast, one foot jerks. Hits can be explosive!
